Tattva Bodha · passage 14

The Self

ātmā kaḥ? sthūlasūkṣmakāraṇaśarīrādvyatiriktaḥ pañcakośātītaḥ san avasthātrayasākṣī saccidānandasvarūpaḥ san yastiṣṭhati sa ātmā |

What is the Self? That which stands apart from the gross, subtle, and causal bodies; which is beyond the five sheaths; which witnesses the three states; whose very nature is being, consciousness, and bliss; and which remains through it all. That is the Self.

In plain words

What is the Self (ātman)? It is distinct from the three bodies (gross, subtle, causal), beyond the five sheaths, and the witness of the three states. Its nature is being-consciousness-bliss (sat-cit-ānanda). That which remains as this witness is the Self.
